A 12-year-old Boy Scout died in Michigan after he was digging into a sand dune and it collapsed on top of him.

WOOD TV reports that the child had been trapped in the dune anywhere from 15 to 30 minutes before he was dug out by rescuers.

Emergency responders were able to establish a pulse on the child but had to maneuver through tough terrain not only by the dunes but also through the woods leading to the helicopter. He was pronounced dead at a local hospital.

The South Haven Police Department said Sunday an autopsy was pending and that it was still investigating, but that the incident appears to have been "a tragic accident."

The Scouts went on to say that safety was "integral to everything we do" and that they place "great importance on prevention and preparedness" to keep its members safe.
