MILWAUKEE -- The City of Milwaukee filed a lawsuit against Bird Rides Inc. -- it's the company that distributed 100 motorized scooters in Milwaukee late last month.
The lawsuit was filed on Friday, July 6. According to the lawsuit, the city sent a letter to the scooter company warning it that riding the scooters in Milwaukee is illegal on sidewalks and in the streets. The lawsuit claims the scooter company refused to stop operations in the city.
The lawsuit also states the scooters are not registered with the state of Wisconsin.
The scooters can be found in different spots throughout the city, but those caught riding on a city sidewalk or street could face a nearly $100.
However, a lot of riders don’t seem to care.
“I just saw two cops and we stopped and talked to them," said Steven Patrick. "They saw us driving them."
“If it’s a $100.00 risk to use a scooter...it’s worth it,” said Henry leal.
The electric scooters are activated by your smartphone and can be left anywhere after a rider is done using one.
The court hearing is scheduled for 10 a.m. this Friday at Milwaukee County Circuit Court. The city is requesting a temporary injunction to have the scooters removed immediately.
