RACINE COUNTY -- Racine County may become the next municipality to legalize marijuana.

The county’s Government Services Committee is holding a public hearing Tuesday night where residents will get a chance to voice their opinion on whether or not legalization should be considered.

The motion is being spearheaded by County Supervisor Fabi Maldonado and Supervisor Nick Demske.

Maldonado says his motivation behind the measure is both financial, and moral, “We have so many things we need to fund in Wisconsin, and to essentially be throwing away cash and locking people away on this failed drug war, is just a waste of time.”

The discussion tonight will not lead to the legalization of marijuana in Racine County, but instead will lead the way for a non-binding referendum to be put on the November ballot that asks residents how they’d feel about legalizing cannabis. If voters decide in favor of it, then the County Board could begin the process of legalization.

Tuesday's meeting will be held in the auditorium of the Ives Grove Office Complex in Sturtevant. It starts at 6pm.
