MILWAUKEE -- East side German Bar Von Trier will close in late 2017 and reopen as an upscale cocktail lounge with a "mid-century vibe," according to TODAY'S TMJ4's partners at the Milwaukee Business Journal.
“The North Avenue neighborhood has been going through a period of change for the last five years,” co-owner John Sidoff said in a news release, according to the Business Journal. “While our original intent was to maintain Von Trier through retirement, the reality is, despite discussions with many Milwaukee bar/restaurant owners, there is little interest in taking over the bar and continuing the tradition.”
Located at the corner of East North and Farwell Avenues, the German-themed bar with extensive memorabilia, steins, and wooding carvings has been open since 1978. The Business Journal reports that once extensive renovations are done in 2018, the bar's owners hope to recreate an experience similar to the cocktail lounge feel of Rieder's - the establishment that came before Von Trier.
The news is another example of a larger trend of change on Milwaukee's east side. Establishments like G-Daddy's BBC, Red Dot, Yield Bar, Hotel Foster, Rosati's, Trocadero, and more have all closed in about the last year.
“This new evolution of the bar will better support the evolving clientele and businesses of the North Avenue district," Sidoff said.
Von Trier is expected to remain open through the 2017 holiday season.
