The greatest myth about college is that it’s not affordable. That's according to a former professor at Marquette University who’s now written several books helping students and parents prepare for the cost of higher education.

Professor Bob Neuman spent 30 years at Marquette and says one of the most expensive failures of college bound students is simply not being prepared.

“If you put the time in preparing for college,” Neuman said. “…college is going to be very affordable to you.”
Among his many recommendations, Neuman believes students should begin taking college entrance exams as early as freshman year in high school to get lots of practice and to shoot for higher scores. That can open doors to thousands of additional dollars in scholarships.

Neuman also suggests applying to six or more schools in search of the best deal. But his most important guideline is to make sure students commit to graduating on time. It saves thousands in tuition, and also gets graduates into the workforce earning a salary sooner.
