Expert says plants will adjust to warmer weather

It's been so warm lately plants are starting to bud. But we all know there's still plenty of winter left.

We're in the middle of winter, but the weather's warm enough to warrant a pickup game of basketball. So if it’s confusing for creatures with a prefrontal cortex, imagine how plants and flowers must feel as they begin budding so early.

Beautiful Blooms Landscaping Owner Loriena Harrington claims, “They might not have a brain, per se, like you and I do…but they do have a sense.”

Harrington has reassuring words for homeowners worried about the risk of long-term damage to plants budding long before spring.

“Mother Nature is pretty tough, as we refer to her, but the plants, they’re going to come up when the time is right.  If they come up a little bit too soon, we might see a little bit of tip burn on some of those real early leaves, or the real early flower buds, but right now, this time of the year, we’re not too concerned,” she reassured.

Harrington already has her crews out pruning. And for those in the field, there's an enormous upside to the unusual temperatures. Landscape architect Bill Wandsnider seems practically jubilant about the warm weather's positive impact on his business.

“We have talked to more people already this year at this time than I did maybe all of last year, because when people look outside, and there’s no snow, and there’s warm weather, they’re thinking we need to get going on our projects,” he adds.
