It's not uncommon to see knitted hats for nursery patients, or scarves and socks for other people in the hospital. But, at Froedtert & Medical College of Wisconsin, they're giving out knitted items exclusively for breast cancer patients.

They're called Knitted Knockers -- breast shaped knit inserts for women who have had procedures that chance their shape. The volunteers said they are stuffed with batting -- but that's not all.

"You just think about the person and just kind of say some kind of prayer and blessing that they can find some comfort and peace," said Charlotte Brady, a master knitter and technician in the Courage Clinic at Froedtert & MCW Clinical Cancer Center.

Brady considers the "knockers" prayer shawls for breast cancer patients. They're worn by the heart, giving confidence and support to women.

"If they're having a bad day it could mean the world to them," said Holly Immel, a Technician in the Froedtert & MCW Clinical Cancer Day Hospital. Brady said they're more comfortable than other prosthesis available.

She said this community will continue and grow.

"People with cancer is a community and knitters are also a community, so the two can come together," Brady said.

Immel considers it a way to reach out to cancer patients.

"Just to know that other people care, even strangers that they don't know care," she said.

The women consider the "knockers" and extension of the patient and an extension of care.

"We take care of the whole person, not just the condition," Brady said.

The hospital hopes to continue the project. You can find more information about the group, including a pattern to create the "knockers" or how to get them, right here. www.knittedknockers.org
