SHEBOYGAN -- Investigators are still trying to determine what caused a deadly fire in Sheboygan early Sunday where more than 40 people were displaced.

"I walked outside and it was an inferno,” resident Jackie Dirksen said.

At 4:30 a.m., residents of the Embers Apartments, 3615 S Business Dr., said they heard a crackling sound and could smell heavy smoke sweeping through the 48-unit apartment complex.

Police, who were first on the scene, immediately started going door-to-door evacuating people.

“I was just concerned about safety, as I have family members living here,” Andrew Aguilar said.

Sheboygan Fire Chief Kenneth Rissen said the fire started on the north end of the building. Other fire companies; Kohler, Haven, the Town of Wilson and Sheboygan Falls were called for backup.

“We have called the state fire marshal in to assist us in this investigation,” Risse said.

The victim’s identity has not been released. However, Risse said the victim is an adult.

There were no other reported injuries. Displaced residents were able to receive help from the American Red Cross at Farnsworth Middle School.

“They’re getting a roof over their head, they’re getting a snack and they’re talking to our mental health care providers," said Steven Hansen with the American Red Cross. "They are just seeking refuge at this time. They’re just trying to think through what they’re going to be doing moving forward from here."
