Cyclists have taken over Milwaukee's Riverwest neighborhood for a 24-hour race.
The Riverwest 24 is not your traditional bike race. Not only do participants need points to win, they also must earn them by completing five mile laps and some rather unique challenges.
What’s an example of a challenge?
"A haircut which is always barbers choice," says Jessica Baumann, race volunteer.
Team RYB finished third last year. This group of bike couriers from Chicago say the challenges only help them since it's similar to their job.
"We are able to get back in the game instantly," says Steven Bostwick, Team RYB .
Team members say diet also plays an integral role in the outcome of the race.
One item on the dinner menu --- garlic spaghetti sandwiches.
"The garlic bread definitely gives you the edge. A racer gets up on you late in the evening, you've got a certain odor coming off you, they might not want to pass right away," says Bostwick.
RYB's strategy also includes inflatable couches that not only keeps their legs elevated , but they also allow riders to catch a 20 to 30 minute nap during the race.
Strategy aside, race organizer say participants likely won't win if they don’t complete the challenges. Another challenge example includes permanently inking of the body.
"You don't have to do anything, but if you wanna win it would behoove you to get a tattoo," says Jeremy Prach, race organizer.
Riders obtain an extra five points for the ink, if they sign up with the tattoo artist ahead of time. This year every spot was already taken.
The race officially ends at 7 p.m. Saturday night at Pierce and Center Streets.
